FRG, Inc. Staff Volunteers for a Challenging Out Island Adventure

December 11, 2019

“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”

FRG Office Manager, Stephany Spanier, makes time to volunteer as an Adult Advisor with a high adventure Venturing crew. Venturing is a co-ed inclusive youth-led program through Scouts BSA for young adults aged 14-21. This opportunity enables teenagers to challenge themselves physically and mentally, experience positive leadership roles, participate in community service, and make ethical choices by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

A crew of 16 members stayed on Big Munson Island, a primitive barrier island located in the Keys at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base. After paddling in war canoes for roughly 6 miles, they set up camp, went snorkeling, deep sea fishing, cooked on an open fire, and participated in an environmental conservation project. “Adult Advisors are there to make sure the rules are followed and safety is ensured, but the youth are the ones that drive the programs and activities,” said Stephany Spanier.
